The Field Book Collection

A guide-journal in two complementary halves

This guide-journal belongs to The Field Book Collection, and every volume in it is built the same way: two complementary halves. Neither stands alone. One records what is known, the other records what you saw.

First half

Field guide

Comprehensive species accounts, organised by viewing accessibility: field notes, habitat details, sighting-difficulty ratings, detailed illustrations, and maps that accompany your observations.

A species-account spread from the field guide half

Second half

Field journal

Turns the guide into your personal journal through three tools: an expedition log for trip details, a species checklist, and a chronological life-list that builds a timeline of your observations.

A journal spread showing the log, checklist and life-list rows

Together, these sections create both a scientific record and a personal memoir of your journey.

How hard it is to see — our star rating

Every account carries one to six stars, weighing how often the bird is recorded, how reachable its habitat is, and how threatened it is.

Expedition log

One page per outing. Date, site, the hours you arrived and left, the weather, who was with you, and what the habitat was doing — the context that makes an entry worth reading years later.

Species checklist

Tick the endemics as you find them. Twenty-three rows, ruled for pencil: the simplest page in the book, and the one most readers open first.

Chronological life-list

Your record, in the order it happened. Every first sighting, dated, carrying a trip code that links it back to the expedition log — so a name on this page can always be traced to the morning you earned it.

L. Arturo Román
“I really do love birds. For nearly a decade my life outdoors has revolved around elusive animals, and most of what that taught me was about waiting. When I began reading traditional field guides I kept finding the same gap: they tell you what an animal is, and almost nothing about your chances of seeing it. What I wanted was information I could actually use, and information that was current — and that is what this book sets out to be. So each of these twenty-three accounts answers four questions instead of one: what it is, where it lives, when to go, and how hard it will be. The second half is blank on purpose. A guide holds what is known; the journal holds what you saw, and after two seasons that is the half you will open first.”

“I have drawn birds for guides to South and North America, and the endemics of the United States were the smallest brief I have been given and the most exacting — twenty-three birds, each of which had to carry a page on its own. Every plate here is watercolour on paper, painted at the size you see rather than reduced from something larger. What I wanted was not a diagnostic diagram but the bird as you would meet it: the tilt of the head, the light across the breast, the posture that tells you what it is before the field marks do.”

Painted by hand

Thousands of strokes, one bird at a time

Illustrations in this book were painted by hand, in the tradition field illustrators have kept alive for two centuries.

Watch the washes go down and a bird arrives slowly — the edge of a wing, the tilt of a head, the light on a breast. Hours of patience in every plate, and the affection of someone who has spent a life looking at these birds.
